The Gist:

  • Toyota offers three levels of extended warranty coverage, known as the Platinum, Gold, and Powertrain plans. Each can provide total coverage of up to 10 years/125,000 miles.
  • A Toyota extended warranty will not cover corrosion damage or common wear and tear items like brake pads, batteries, or air filters.
  • You’ll need to contact your local Toyota dealer for cost information, as the manufacturer doesn’t publish price estimates online.

Toyota consistently scores high in industry studies for reliability, so is it worth it to buy a Toyota extended warranty? In this article, we’ll review the vehicle protection plans offered by the manufacturer and discuss how much a Toyota extended warranty may cost you.

What Does A Toyota Extended Warranty Cover?

Toyota vehicle service agreements (VSAs) are also known as extended warranties or protection plans. There are three coverage levels: Powertrain Protection, Gold Protection, and Platinum Protection. You can purchase coverage for new or used Toyota models. Here are a few features common to all Toyota extended warranty plans:

  • New cars are eligible for a VSA within the 3-year/36,000-mile factory warranty term.
  • Drivers can add a VSA to a used Toyota model only at the time of purchase.
  • All plans come with roadside assistance, trip interruption benefits, and rental car reimbursement.
  • Drivers can choose between a $0 or $100 disappearing deductible.

Toyota Extended Warranty Plans

Toyota’s three levels of extended warranty protection run concurrent with the original factory warranty or from the in-service date for up to a total of 10 years or 125,000 miles, whichever comes first. See the table below for more information on specific coverage terms available for new vehicles:

Toyota Extended WarrantyNew Vehicle Coverage Terms
Platinum Protection3 years/50,000 miles to 10 years/125,000 miles
Gold Protection3 years/50,000 miles to 8 years/125,000 miles
Powertrain ProtectionUp to 6 years/100,000 miles

If your car is new, note that you can only buy an extended warranty from Toyota before your vehicle’s factory warranty expires. If you’re buying a used car, you can only add the warranty on the day you purchase the vehicle.

Toyota offers the same three extended warranty plan levels for used cars but with shorter maximum term lengths. Coverage is also available for Toyota-certified used vehicles, which we’ll discuss in another section below.

See the table below for more information on additional coverage for used vehicles:

Toyota Extended WarrantyUsed Vehicle Coverage Terms
Platinum ProtectionUp to 5 years/60,000 miles
Gold ProtectionUp to 5 years/60,000 miles
Powertrain ProtectionUp to 2 years/24,000 miles

We’ll review each Toyota extended warranty plan, including coverage and term lengths, in full detail in the sections below.

Toyota Powertrain Protection Plan

The most basic level of Toyota’s extended warranty coverage is the Powertrain Protection VSA. As the name suggests, it covers components of the powertrain beyond the factory warranty. This coverage includes:

  • The engine block, cylinder heads, and similar components
  • Transfer case components and certain transmission parts
  • The drive axle assembly
  • Hybrid/alternative fuel components

For new cars, the maximum coverage length is 6 years/100,000 miles from the in-service date. For used cars, the plan can add up to 2 years/24,000 miles of powertrain warranty coverage after the purchase date. A used car purchased from a dealer is eligible for the Powertrain VSA if it has fewer than 150,000 miles and is within the last 13 model years.

Toyota Gold Protection Plan

The mid-range Toyota extended warranty option is the Gold VSA. It covers everything under the Powertrain plan plus additional parts on these systems:

  • Suspension
  • Steering
  • Fuel
  • Cooling
  • Air conditioning/heating
  • Brakes
  • Electrical
  • High-tech equipment
  • Additional hybrid components

The Gold plan can cover new vehicles for up to 8 years/125,000 miles from the in-service date, if purchased when the factory warranty is still in effect. As far as dealership extended warranties go, that’s a solid coverage period. Used cars are eligible until 150,000 miles (and within the last 10 model years), and the Gold plan can add up to 5 years/60,000 miles of coverage.

Toyota Platinum Protection Plan

Toyota’s highest coverage option is the Platinum Protection VSA. This Toyota extended warranty plan covers up to 1,100 parts on most systems of the vehicle. Coverage highlights include:

  • More electrical components are covered than in the Gold VSA
  • Exclusionary warranty, meaning repairs are covered unless the part is specifically excluded in your contract
  • More parts in the brake, suspension, and high-tech systems than in other plans

The Platinum VSA shares the same eligibility requirements as the Gold VSA, with new cars being eligible up to 3 years/36,000 from its in-service date. This plan offers the longest coverage length of any Toyota-backed extended warranty at 10 years/125,000 miles for new vehicles. Used cars are eligible for coverage until 150,000 miles (and within the last 10 model years), and are covered up to 5 years/60,000 miles after purchase.

Toyota Extended Warranty Benefits

All Toyota extended warranties come with various benefits, outlined in the table below:

Toyota
Extended Warranty Benefit
What It Covers
24/7 Roadside AssistanceRoadside assistance includes towing, winching, tire repair services, battery jump-starts, fuel delivery, and lockout help.
Travel ProtectionIf you experience a mechanical breakdown more than 150 miles from home, under the Platinum VSA Toyota will provide rental car reimbursement for up to $50 a day for a maximum of five days and up to $100 per day for a maximum of five days for lodging and meals. Coverage is reduced on the Gold and Powertrain plans.
Transferrable CoverageYour Toyota VSA coverage can be transferred once from the original owner of the vehicle to a new owner for no cost.

Toyota extended warranties also come with a 30-day money-back guarantee. However, you’ll need to pay a $50 processing fee to cancel it for a full refund.

It’s good to note that travel protection benefits have maximum claim limits. The Platinum plan reimburses up to $100 per day with a five-day maximum over the life of the warranty, but the Gold and Powertrain plans limit coverage to $50 per day with a four-day maximum. Similarly, rental car coverage is reduced on Gold and Powertrain plans with $35 daily for up to five days per breakdown while the Platinum VSA provides up to $50 per day.

What Does Toyota Extended Warranty Not Cover?

There are some limitations to Toyota’s protection plans. No matter which type of VSA you buy, you are required to go to a dealership for all repairs. Going to a dealer isn’t always the most convenient option it can be more expensive to go to the dealer if you need to repair non-covered parts. Plus, not every dealership gives the same level of service.

Most extended warranty plans won’t pay for the following:

  • Wear and tear part replacements
  • Regular maintenance
  • Cosmetic parts
  • Standard or hybrid batteries
  • Damage from environmental hazards, misuse, or lack of maintenance
  • Corrosion damage

Toyota Extended Warranty Cost

So, how much should a Toyota extended car warranty cost? Most car manufacturers don’t provide prices for their extended auto warranties online, and Toyota is no different. You’ll have to get a quote from a Toyota dealer to know exactly what you’d pay.

If you add an extended warranty to your car when you purchase the vehicle, Toyota will let you finance the cost of the plan. That’s convenient, but you’ll pay interest on the warranty plan.

Toyota Extended Warranty Price

We’ve spent hundreds of hours researching extended warranty costs to better understand what consumers like you are paying for coverage. Based on quotes we’ve gathered from some of the top-rated providers in our comprehensive industry review, we’ve found that the average extended car warranty costs $3,026 in total.

See the table below for a cost breakdown by protection level.

Extended Car Warranty Protection LevelAverage Total Cost
Exclusionary$3,124
Mid-Level$3,060
Powertrain$2,893

Your exact costs for coverage will depend on a variety of factors, such as your vehicle’s make, model, mileage, age, and more. Your chosen level of coverage will also affect overall costs. For example, if you choose the highest level of coverage available, you’ll pay more than if you purchased a baseline powertrain plan.

Do You Need Toyota Extended Warranty Coverage?

All vehicles age, so you’ll have repairs at some point. Broadly speaking, you have two choices. You can either save up funds to cover repairs yourself, or you can get an extended warranty from Toyota or a third-party warranty provider.

For many drivers, extended warranties make budgeting easier with a steady monthly payment. You’ll also have a better idea of what you would pay when you take your car in for repairs.

As with any contract, it’s important to know exactly what’s covered. Once you understand the terms, you can have peace of mind that those repairs are taken care of.

Toyota Maintenance Costs

According to RepairPal, Toyota owners pay about $441 per year on average for maintenance and repairs. That’s not very much compared to the average across all brands of $652 per year. Toyota also has above-average reliability ratings from RepairPal, with an average of 4.0 out of 5.0 stars.

The table below highlights the reliability ratings and average yearly repair costs for some of the most popular Toyota models:

RepairPal Reliability RatingAverage Annual Repair Cost
Toyota Corolla4.5 out of 5.0$362
Toyota RAV44.0 out of 5.0$429
Toyota Camry4.0 out of 5.0$388
Toyota Prius4.0 out of 5.0$408

It’s also worth noting that Toyota grabbed the number two spot in the J.D. Power 2024 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study℠. Clearly, Toyotas are reliable and relatively cheap vehicles to own and maintain throughout their lifetime.

What Toyota Coverage Do You Already Have?

Toyota’s bumper-to-bumper warranty on new vehicles lasts for 3 years/36,000 miles and is transferable once, if you sell your car. It covers almost any electrical or mechanical component against defects in materials or workmanship. Toyota’s powertrain warranty lasts for 5 years/60,000 miles and covers the engine, transmission, and drive axle.

The certified pre-owned (CPO) warranty provides 1 year/12,000 miles of bumper-to-bumper coverage from the date of purchase. In other words, that warranty begins when you buy a CPO vehicle so it may overlap with any existing factory warranty. Plus, CPO cars come with 7 years/100,000 miles of powertrain coverage from the in-service date.

For hybrid vehicles model year 2020 or newer, the manufacturer offers powertrain coverage under a 10-year/100,000-mile Toyota warranty.

Beyond factory warranties, new Toyota vehicles come with ToyotaCare, which pays for scheduled maintenance for the first 2 years/25,000 miles. After that, you can get a ToyotaCare Plus prepaid maintenance plan if you want a hands-off relationship with your car.

Aftermarket Toyota Extended Warranty

It pays to check out third-party providers over extended manufacturers’ warranties when you’re looking to purchase coverage. First of all, third-party plans are often cheaper than dealership warranties.

Another big benefit of third-party plans is that you can go to any repair shop certified by the National Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE®) for covered repairs. There are tens of thousands of these shops across the U.S., so you’re not limited to the dealership in your town. If you experience a mechanical breakdown far from home, you’ll be able to find a repair shop easier than if you’re limited to Toyota dealerships.

One downside of independent warranty company coverage is that you are not guaranteed the use of genuine Toyota parts or factory-trained technicians for services.
